Strawberry Donuts @ the Donut Man

What better way to begin a sunny Saturday than a fresh strawberry donut from the Donut Man in Glendora, CA, a favorite Elvis haunt? As I went to bed Friday night, visions of a warm glazed donut, split, drowned in fresh strawberries and topped with a light strawberry syrup, not too sweet, danced in my head.

The other donuts, while not quite as showstopping, don't disappoint--both the tiger tail (chocolate twist) and the maple-glazed longjohn disappeared from our group quickly. The coffee's nothing special, and you'll want to fortify yourself before the drive anyway. Seating's minimal (a few cramped benches out front and on the side), and you may face a short line, but you can easily pass the time drooling over the window's contents.

This tiny 24-hour donut stand only has strawberries in season, so get yours soon--though if you miss them, peach season's around the corner--the Donut Man does those too!

I really don't like donuts normally, but the donut man strawberry donuts are definitely something special. The other stand-out from Donut Man are the apple fritters, which are best coming right out of their ovens in the morning- yum!

Oohhh, apple fritters sound good. I want to try the peach donuts later this summer, too.

So, Jonathan Gold has now won a pulitzer for, among other things, outing this place. A generation ago it was known as Foster's Donuts and was a familiar study break destination for Mudders like me. P-Chem,Systems, and a few other courses perennially featured problem sets so hard that collaboration was not only tolerated but encouraged. Such work parties often required a Foster's run - some lucky stiff would be sent off [a ten mile hike through the snow, OK?] - in the spring, timed to coincide with the 2:15 AM nightly emergence of a fresh batch of strawberry-filleds like the one depicted...seeing one again is almost enough to get me to attend an alumni day.

(MY MOTHER) BETTY SMITH PUT THIS DONUT SHOP ON THE MAP BACK INJ THWE 70'S. WHEN JIM AMD MIOKO FIRST OPENED TTHE SHOP SHE WENT TO WORK MAKING DONUTS. THEY WERE THE BIGGEST AND PRETTIEST ANYONE HAD EVER SEEN. WELL JIM TOLD HER THEY WERE TOO BIG. SHE SAID THIS IS THE WAY I DO IT. HE DECIDED MAYBE IT WAS OK. THE FRESH FRUIT DONUTS CAME INTO EXISTANCE WHEN ONE OF JIMS FRIENDS BROUGHT FRESH FRUIT AND MOTHER MADE SOME FILLING RATHER THAN LET ALL THAT GOOD FRUIT SPOIL. NO ELVIS NEVER SAMPLED THEM, BUT ROY ROGERS SENT HIS DRIVER FROM APPLE VALLEY CA. TO PICK-UP ON A REGULAR BASIS
